About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Defend arbitrations and lawsuits filed in New York and handle other first-party insurance defense matters
- Research laws and prepare legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda
- Render opinions on coverage, medical necessity/causation, damages, and value as requested by the Claims Department
- Prepare and handle arbitration submissions and examinations under oath
- Defend assigned matters by trial or dispositive hearing, as applicable
- Travel as required to attend trials, hearings, depositions, management meetings, and conferences
Requirements
What you’ll need- 2 to 6+ years of experience in litigation REQUIRED
- Juris Doctor degree REQUIRED
- Admission to the New York Bar REQUIRED
- Must be licensed in good standing to practice law in New York and meet and maintain licensing requirements including mandatory Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirements where applicable
- Must be able to travel as required, including but not limited to trials, hearings, depositions, management meetings and conferences
- Must be able to document files in a clear, concise, professional written manner
- Must be able to follow complex instructions, resolve conflicts or facilitate conflict resolution, and have strong organization/priority setting and multi-tasking skills
- Must be able to learn and apply large amounts of technical and procedural information
- Civil litigation experience preferred
- Insurance defense-related litigation experience and/or personal injury preferred
- Must be able to communicate in a professional manner in person, via telephone and written correspondence/email
