About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Defend lawsuits filed in Texas courts
- Handle other first-party insurance defense matters
- Research laws and prepare legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda
- Render opinions on liability, damages, and value as requested by the Claims Department
- Prepare and handle pleadings, motions, and discovery
- Conduct and handle depositions, examinations before trial, and examinations under oath
- Defend assigned matters through trial or dispositive hearing, as applicable
Requirements
What you’ll need- 7+ years of litigation experience in insurance, defense, and/or personal injury
- Juris Doctor degree REQUIRED
- Admission to the Texas Bar REQUIRED
- Must be licensed in good standing to practice law in Texas
- Must meet and maintain licensing requirements, including mandatory Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirements where applicable
- Must be able to travel as required, including to trials, hearings, depositions, management meetings, and conferences
- Must be able to document files in a clear, concise, professional written manner
- Must be able to follow complex instructions, resolve conflicts or facilitate conflict resolution, and demonstrate strong organization, priority-setting, and multitasking skills
- Must be able to learn and apply large amounts of technical and procedural information
- Preferred: Civil litigation experience
- Preferred: Insurance defense-related litigation experience
- Must be able to communicate in a professional manner in person, via telephone, and through written correspondence/email
