About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Supervise daily accounting functions, including general ledger maintenance, accounts payable, accounts receivable, corporate credit cards, and multi-state payroll administration
  • Lead month-end and year-end closing processes
  • Generate financial statements for executive leadership and the Board of Directors
  • Monitor organization-wide cash flow projections and optimize working capital
  • Track and allocate restricted and unrestricted revenue streams
  • Partner with the Advancement team on grant proposals, allocations, and compliance reporting
  • Direct the annual independent financial audit
  • Manage IRS Form 990 filings and state registrations
  • Partner with program, early childhood, and advancement teams on budgets and variance reports
  • Evaluate, scale, and continuously improve accounting enterprise systems
  • Mentor non-financial team members on financial literacy
  • Manage external financial partnerships and outsourced accounting workflow
  • Serve as primary point of contact for external audit partners

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • CPA designation strongly preferred
  • 7+ years of progressive financial management experience
  • At least 3 years inside a growing nonprofit organization managing a multi-million dollar budget
  • Deep familiarity with GAAP
  • Experience with nonprofit fund tracking
  • Experience with multi-state employment compliance
  • Experience with QuickBooks, Bill.com, or specialized nonprofit accounting platforms
  • Candidate must be located in the DMV area
  • Must work in-office on Tuesday and Wednesday
