About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide professional technical services for customers through technical site analysis, remedial maintenance, and repair of UPS systems from 1–1000 kVA
- Perform startup and commissioning of UPS/critical power equipment across various product lines
- Perform preventive maintenance on single-module and multi-module systems
- Perform unscheduled maintenance and repairs on UPS/critical power systems up to 1000 kVA
- Perform basic power audits of customer distribution systems
- Document required information for each site visit, including UPS/critical power systems and DC/battery plants
- Work with team members on custom and large installation projects
- Respond promptly and professionally to emergency calls, including holidays and weekends
- Work with OEMs on software upgrades and required repairs
- Stay current on revisions, updates, and new additions to UPS/critical power systems
- Conduct site visits and technical evaluations
- Complete critical action reports, status reports, and field service reports
- Assist with warranty contract sales as required
- Maintain site information integrity and report descriptions to the UPS Supervisor and UPS Service Manager
- Train other Field Service Engineers on product knowledge when required
- Document, label, and return defective parts to designated disposal/repair locations
- Educate customers on basic equipment operation
- Inform customers about equipment issues in a beneficial manner
- Attend customer meetings at the UPS Service Director’s request
- Perform other assigned duties
Requirements
What you’ll need- Fundamental knowledge of electrical distribution systems
- Basic test and measurement equipment knowledge
- Fundamental knowledge of electrical code and IEEE requirements
- In-depth knowledge of electronic principles
- High level of customer service skills
- Ability to travel regionally on an as-needed basis
- High level of technical knowledge of electronic/electrical component theory
- Ability to work with general direction and independently
- Must operate within division policy guidelines using independent judgment
- Must comply with all safety policies, practices, and procedures
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret electrical single lines, general business procedures, professional documents, technical procedures, engineering blueprints, and governmental regulations
- Ability to write service reports and procedures
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, and customers
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
- Ability to interpret technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with abstract and concrete variables
- Proficient personal computer skills, including email, record keeping, databases, word processing, spreadsheets, and graphics
- Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
- 8–10 years of extensive UPS maintenance, installation, and repair experience on major brands including Eaton, APC, MGE, Toshiba, Mitsubishi, Liebert/Vertiv, Online Power, Myers, Chloride, and Riello
- Factory OEM training certifications in all or some of the listed UPS brands
- Working knowledge of UPS communication protocols, including Toshiba, Mitsubishi, Chloride, Liebert/Vertiv, MGE, and Powerware/Eaton
- Working knowledge of combined generator, ATS, and fire alarm systems is a plus
- Ability to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods
- Agility and mobility for finger, hand, arm, and leg movement
- Ability to communicate effectively by speaking and hearing
- Ability to lift and carry objects up to 75 pounds
- Ability to see and focus clearly up close and at short distances
- Associate degree or above in electronics/electrical with at least 8 years of related experience, or 10–15+ years of equivalent related-field experience, or equivalent combinations of education and experience
- Prior electrician experience helpful
- Prior three-phase, single-phase, and single- and multi-module UPS experience required
