About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Support the Dean of the College in carrying out responsibilities for instructional program effectiveness and academic policies
  • Advise undergraduate students across approximately 50 majors and 50 minors
  • Monitor students’ progress toward degrees
  • Arbitrate academic issues and interpret academic regulations
  • Oversee and approve course registration
  • Provide academic guidance and support academic orientation
  • Maintain academic files and ensure the integrity of academic records for approximately 300 advisees
  • Review and approve transfer credit, study abroad programs, academic program changes, and degree-audit exceptions
  • Support students on matters affecting personal well-being and academic success
  • Refer students to campus partner offices and maintain regular contact with those offices
  • Participate in College Academic Council events, office retreats, New Student Orientation, Parents Weekend, and Commencement activities
  • Resolve complex conflicts involving students, faculty, parents, and the institution
  • Interact with advisors, records specialists, faculty, students, and campus partner offices

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree in an academic field appropriate to a college of arts and sciences
  • 3-5 years’ experience in higher education advising or administration
  • Demonstrated interest in academic advising
  • Appreciation for the value of a liberal arts education
  • An understanding of Georgetown’s Jesuit and Catholic identity
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Good listening skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, meet time-sensitive deadlines, and set priorities
  • Strong orientation to detail
  • A penchant for problem-solving
  • Ability to work well under pressure and function as a team player
  • Poise, diplomacy and confidence to handle confidential situations and interactions with faculty, parents and partner offices
  • Sensitivity to the needs and concerns of a diverse student population
  • Master’s degree in an academic field appropriate to a college of arts and sciences (preferred)
  • Familiarity with student information systems (preferred)
  • Prior teaching, counseling or administrative work (preferred)
