About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Draft, prepare, process and file routine court documents
- Prepare and organize trial books and exhibit books
- Prepare and organize file materials from electronic sources to trial files
- Prepare and process documentation for search warrant extensions
- Schedule witness interviews, potentially attending and taking notes for Crown Prosecutors
- Schedule and organize witness travel arrangements
- Arrange virtual applications for police officers and other witnesses
- Prepare witnesses for court by explaining the criminal process, answering questions, resolving issues and directing them to appropriate resources
- Liaise with policing and other agencies to ensure subpoenas have been served
- Participate in legal research at the direction of Crown Prosecutors
- Use and update JOIN, PRISM and Criminal e-file (CrEF) to verify charges, court dates, assigned prosecutors, locations and subpoenaed witnesses
- Track and maintain file integrity according to office procedures
- Maintain Crown Prosecutors’ diarizing system
- Perform other office duties as required
Requirements
What you’ll need- Two-year diploma in a related field such as Legal Assistant or Paralegal
- Minimum of one year progressively responsible related experience in a legal administrative role within an office setting
- Equivalencies considered: one year of education for one year of experience, or one year of experience for one year of education
- Experience working with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook and Adobe
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Strong problem solving skills
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to work with stakeholders in a professional manner
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, prioritize work and meet tight deadlines
- Willingness to undergo security screening as a final candidate
- Cover letter briefly outlining criminal law experience required; applications without the cover letter may not be considered
