About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide strategic leadership and technical expertise in the management of Crown land in southern Alberta
  • Lead and mentor a multidisciplinary team of land management specialists, planners, and ecologists
  • Deliver local and regional programs and projects supporting responsible Crown land management
  • Provide leadership and oversight for resource management planning, trail management plans, protected area stewardship, and regional and sub-regional planning
  • Lead engagement with Indigenous communities and organizations, stakeholders, and the public
  • Use facilitation, negotiation, and mediation to resolve contentious land management issues
  • Supervise, mentor, and manage the performance of professional staff
  • Support implementation of Alberta’s Crown Land Vision and Crown Land Recreation and Conservation Strategy
  • Resolve complex Crown land management issues involving trade-offs
  • Represent the department in strategic discussions and multi-stakeholder forums
  • Support ministerial and executive briefings

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Completed four-year university degree in natural sciences or a related field
  • Minimum 6 years of directly related experience
  • Related two-year diploma plus 8 years of related experience may be considered as an equivalency
  • Additional related education may be considered in lieu of experience on a one-for-one basis
  • Demonstrated leadership experience, including mentoring staff and fostering a positive work environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational, time-management, and problem-solving abilities
  • Experience in stakeholder engagement, facilitation, negotiation, consensus building, and conflict resolution
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships with diverse stakeholders and partners
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Teams, SharePoint, and ArcGIS
  • Knowledge of Crown land and natural resource management, land-use planning, and recreation management is an asset
  • Knowledge of relevant Alberta legislation, policies, and guidelines is an asset
  • Experience balancing biodiversity and ecosystem conservation with industrial, recreational, and other land uses is an asset
  • Experience in land use planning and management of recreational trail networks and protected areas is an asset
  • Ability to operate off-highway vehicles, snowmobiles, and four-wheel-drive vehicles in remote environments is an asset
