About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Oversee caseload distribution discussions and make final student assignment decisions
  • Ensure transfer procedures are complete for incoming students
  • Coordinate, facilitate, and execute initial and triennial Review of Existing Data and Review of Additional Data meetings
  • Conduct classroom observations and gather data on students referred by the student study team
  • Facilitate transition of parent relationships to assigned ESSCs from initial evaluation to IEP development
  • Coordinate, facilitate, and execute annual IEP meetings for students on the caseload
  • Observe general education teachers' implementation of student IEPs
  • Manage related service provider relationships, including orientation, evaluation coordination, meetings, services, invoice processing, and progress reports
  • Serve as academy lead of the ESS team and support completion of team responsibilities
  • Assist Phoenix Home Office in training ESSCs on special education pedagogy
  • Partner with the headmaster to communicate SPED Coordinator and SPED Teacher roles
  • Attend initial IEP meetings led by SPED Teachers and provide guidance and feedback
  • Review IEPs and evaluation reports for accuracy
  • Model and guide SPED Teachers in partnering with general education teachers
  • Partner with the headmaster on written and oral evaluations of SPED Teachers
  • Update special education program information in the school information system
  • Lead the Special Student Services team in end-of-year responsibilities and rollover preparation
  • Model the academy's core virtues and pursue a classical, liberal arts education

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred
  • Minimum 3 years experience as a special education coordinator
  • Experience as special education coordinator in Great Hearts school preferred
  • Experience with special education evaluation process preferred
  • Valid TX Special Education Certification and Generalist or Core Academic Subject Area relevant to grades served
  • Extensive knowledge of special education process, including state and federal timelines and compliance requirements
  • Leadership, coaching, and mentoring skill/experience
  • High level of emotional intelligence
  • Humility and skill with collaboration between multiple teams
  • Conflict resolution and mediation
  • Strong verbal and written communication skill
  • Experience and speed with multiple platforms and computer programs (Student Information Systems, IEP writing programs, MS Office Suite, Google)
  • US work authorization is required
  • Successful completion of a criminal history background check and fingerprint clearance in accordance with state requirements
  • Ability to perform physical functions including standing, sitting, repetitious hand and body movements, bending, squatting, and reaching
  • May be required to move or position equipment up to 15 pounds approximately
