About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Own the end-to-end experience of products used by customers, field agents and staff teams.
  • Conduct field research, usability tests, contextual interviews and concept tests with Energy Officers, customers and operations teams.
  • Design end-to-end journeys for sales, onboarding, collections, servicing and assist, including offline steps.
  • Create production-ready visual designs optimized for small screens, bright sunlight and low-end Android devices.
  • Design for intermittent connectivity, offline states, synchronization, failure recovery, low digital literacy and multiple languages.
  • Own the component library and design standards, keeping them aligned with engineering implementation.
  • Build clickable prototypes, use AI tools to generate variants and draft copy, and test prototypes with users.
  • Produce handoff-ready files, specifications and states, including empty, error, loading, missing-data and poor-network cases.
  • Review builds before release and maintain implementation quality.
  • Define success metrics and work with product and data teams to analyze adoption and funnel data after release.
  • Collaborate with product managers, engineers and market operations teams throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Travel as required to Sun King markets, including Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Tanzania and Myanmar, with regular field visits.
  • Report to the Head of Product, Enterprise Products.

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Portfolio of shipped product work (mandatory), including two or three cases in depth.
  • 5–7 years designing digital products, with meaningful time on mobile.
  • Experience designing for users who are not like you, ideally in emerging markets, field operations, fintech or last-mile distribution.
  • Comfortable being the most senior designer in the room and setting the standard.
  • Able to structure and evaluate ambiguous problems.
  • Clear communication in writing.
  • Proactive attitude and willingness to conduct research, design and testing hands-on.
  • Professional working proficiency in English (mandatory).
  • Expert in Figma, including components, variables, auto layout and prototyping.
  • Hands-on experience building or maintaining a design system.
  • Practical research skills: usability testing, contextual inquiry and field interviews.
  • Android design conventions and Material Design.
  • Accessibility and legibility fundamentals, including contrast, touch targets, text scaling and low-literacy patterns.
  • Data literacy sufficient to read funnel, adoption and A/B test results.
  • Comfortable using AI tools in the design workflow.
  • Experience designing offline-first or intermittently integrated applications is good to have.
  • Front-end familiarity with HTML, CSS or React is good to have.
  • Motion design or illustration is good to have.
  • Service design experience is good to have.
  • Exposure to pay-as-you-go, asset finance, microfinance or emerging-market lending is good to have.
  • Hands-on experience with SQL is good to have.
