About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide technical feasibility assessments for ambiguous Enterprise opportunities
- Own technical discovery and requirements gathering for complex opportunities
- Build working proofs of concept for proposed agents
- Translate deployments into business cases covering hours saved, risk reduced, and compliance simplified
- Embed with clients and write production code for compliance decisions
- Diagnose and resolve data issues, jurisdiction mapping, and tax ID reconciliation problems
- Keep technical teams and business stakeholders aligned as requirements evolve
- Deliver builds and runbooks for Client Success
- Feed sales and implementation insights into product and go-to-market strategy
- Create solution patterns, demo flows, and deployment documentation
- Act as a customer-facing technical bridge across engineering, solution architecture, agentic AI, and customer delivery
Requirements
What you’ll need- Demonstrated 5+ years of hands-on experience in a customer-facing technical role such as Forward Deployed Engineer, Solutions Engineer, AI Engineer, Implementation Engineer, Solutions Architect, Technical Consultant, or similar
- Proven track record of shipping production systems in ambiguous, client-facing environments
- Experience with REST APIs, webhooks, event-driven systems, auth patterns, data modeling, idempotency, and failure modes
- Experience building production systems in highly regulated categories
- Payroll, tax, or compliance fluency deep enough to run a conversation with a client's compliance team without a translator
- Experience with agentic workflows beyond prototypes, including MCP or function-calling patterns, evaluation and reliability practices
- Deep technical discovery skills and ability to navigate ambiguity
- Ability to scope technical solutions from ambiguous opportunities, build subscription business cases, and ship reusable patterns
- Ability to present to and influence audiences ranging from engineers to executive sponsors
- Entrepreneurial mindset, passion for Gusto's mission, and empathy for clients
- Bonus: experience with an HR/payroll platform's integration surface, enterprise procurement or security review processes, or MEDDPICC-style deal frameworks
- Reliable, consistent internet connection when approved to work outside a Gusto office
