About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Own and extend Gusto's existing third-party integrations and build new integrations as the portfolio grows
  • Design and build reliable backend services using Ruby on Rails and Sidekiq to sync data between Gusto and partner platforms
  • Evaluate and help build new integration patterns, including AI agent protocols such as MCP
  • Define the technical approach and roadmap as the Integrations domain grows
  • Partner with Product, Design, and Data Science to validate accountant workflows and iterate based on feedback
  • Participate in code review and help establish engineering practices
  • Mentor other engineers as the team scales
  • Build and maintain integrations between Gusto and third-party software used by accounting firms

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 8+ years of professional software development experience
  • Experience owning multi-quarter projects end-to-end, including scoping, planning, execution, stakeholder management, and launch
  • Strong platform/application engineering background in services, APIs, third-party integrations, data flows, and observability
  • Comfortable operating in an ambiguous, early-stage domain
  • Ruby on Rails experience strongly preferred
  • Experience with OAuth and third-party API integrations a plus
  • Familiarity with AI agent protocols such as MCP or agentic integration patterns a plus
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to explain technical tradeoffs to engineers and cross-functional partners
  • AI-native mindset with AI tools embedded in daily engineering workflow
  • Ability to work from the New York, San Francisco, Seattle, or Denver locations as applicable to the stated compensation bands and hybrid office expectations
