About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Design, build, and test Gusto's core billing platform, including usage jobs, subscriptions, orders, invoice generation, payments, reporting, and accounting integrations
  • Mentor engineers solving complex technical problems at large scale
  • Help scale Gusto's Ruby/Rails and JavaScript/React applications
  • Collaborate with Product Engineering, Product Management, Data, and Design teams to understand customer pain points and develop solutions
  • Prototype, iterate, and launch products daily
  • Build products customers value
  • Shape architecture early in the design process
  • Improve and maintain a high-throughput transactional billing platform
  • Build self-service internal features and APIs
  • Own platform performance after launch
  • Enable product teams to launch new products and support billing models such as multi-entity and multi-currency anniversary billing

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 8+ years of software development experience
  • Experience leveraging AI tools or systems to accelerate development, improve testing, and deliver new platform capabilities
  • Curiosity and experimentation with emerging AI frameworks
  • Experience building large high-throughput distributed systems
  • Experience in the commerce domain, including invoicing, commerce, payment processing, or revenue recognition
  • Experience owning multi-quarter projects solving complex engineering problems with measurable user impact at scale
  • Experience with large-scale refactors, performance and reliability issues, and ownership of a platform area
  • Ability to mentor engineers
  • Experience in, or interest in working in, Ruby on Rails
  • Ability to communicate effectively across engineering teams and with business stakeholders
  • Ability to work from the San Francisco or San Jose metro area and in the office approximately 2–3 days per week
