  • Identify, solicit, underwrite, and sell new and renewal accounts
  • Drive profitable growth aligned with unit appetite and growth goals
  • Provide insurance solutions for challenging product liability exposures
  • Apply advanced technical, sales, and analytical skills to assess and manage risk
  • Use internal and external data to make individual and portfolio risk decisions
  • Manage an assigned book of business with high technical complexity
  • Apply risk selection, exposure and hazard identification and control, coverage analysis, and loss analysis
  • Follow underwriting tools, disciplines, strategies, and guidelines
  • Assess pricing components and rating methodology against exposures
  • Determine key questions, operations scope, exposures, and controls from limited risk information
  • Complete file documentation and explain account decisions
  • Prepare rating instructions and proposals for agents
  • Manage portfolio goals including premium, profitability, rate, retention, product mix, new business, and portfolio performance
  • Analyze financial reporting and insurance performance measures
  • Analyze market factors affecting pricing across books, regions, and countrywide operations
  • Prepare and analyze underwriting decisions, requirements, appetite, status, and declinations
  • Identify, solicit, pipeline, negotiate, and close strategically aligned accounts
  • Market capabilities to agents and maintain agency relationships
  • Monitor state and territory issues, regulations, and trends
  • Use market and competitor information in account decisions
  • Build producer relationships to improve yield and retention
  • Identify cross-selling opportunities across lines of business and customer segments
  • Partner with business units to deliver comprehensive insurance solutions
  • Present Hanover products and appetite to agents and customers
  • Use sales systems, tools, and best practices
  • Leverage Claims and Loss Control expertise in the sales process
  • Mentor underwriters and assist with team training

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience
  • 5-7+ years underwriting experience
  • 5-7+ years’ experience driving agency relationships resulting in profitable new and renewal business
  • High hazard product liability experience
  • Ability to identify, analyze, and solve problems and manage and prioritize multiple concurrent projects
  • Knowledge of complex risks, pricing, trends, industry segments, coverages, and product knowledge
  • Ability to adapt quickly to change, exercise influence, and advocate for change
  • Informal leadership ability and willingness to mentor less experienced or newly hired underwriters
  • Strong communication and influence skills with internal and external business partners
  • Sound judgment, negotiation, and business decision-making ability within level of authority
  • Teamwork and collaboration skills across diverse teams
  • Ability to work remotely, hybrid, or onsite as determined by Company business needs
