About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Handle medium- to high-complexity liability cargo and third-party liability claims according to relevant manuals and procedures
  • Assist with high-complexity liability claims, including personal injuries, with a Senior Manager or Director of Corporate Insurance
  • Appoint independent surveyors
  • Request supporting documents from claimants and Hapag-Lloyd organization
  • Review claim facts and merits under applicable contracts
  • Coordinate with insurers and total accounts when policy deductibles are exceeded
  • Initiate and handle third-party recoveries
  • Coordinate attorneys representing Hapag-Lloyd in litigation
  • Negotiate settlements
  • Administer and document claim files in SAP/Instra
  • Monitor and analyze risks for loss prevention
  • Review, analyze, and negotiate service and vendor contracts
  • Review and approve invoices from lawyers, surveyors, and other third-party service providers
  • Administer reserves, estimates, and statistical information in SAP/Instra
  • Coordinate with insurers, attorneys, experts, and operations during serious incidents to mitigate losses
  • Provide advice on insurance, risk, and liability in consultation with senior insurance leadership
  • Obtain insurance certificates and confirmation of insurance coverage
  • Assist with training new employees and ensure departmental and functional training completion
  • Ensure consistent application of Hapag-Lloyd policies
  • Assist the Director of Corporate Insurance as needed

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor's Degree with a minimum of 5 years of experience in the Maritime Industry, handling maritime legal matters, and/or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience
  • Degree in Law, legal studies or a related field is preferred
  • Spanish proficiency is beneficial
  • Team-oriented with a positive, open-minded approach and ability to collaborate effectively across departments and stakeholders
  • Ability to analyze unfamiliar issues and problems logically and systematically using information from multiple sources
  • Ability to make sound decisions in ambiguous situations using general principles and guidelines
  • Ability to adapt decisions to changing circumstances or new information and provide a well-thought-out rationale
  • Proficient in MS Office, including MS Teams, Excel, and PowerPoint, and other software appropriate to work demands
  • Eligibility to work in the United States and completion of the employment eligibility form required under federal law upon hire
