About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Supervise and provide technical direction to a team of designers when functioning as lead designer
- Deliver mechanical and piping deliverables and services on time, within budget, and meeting quality expectations
- Perform advanced design work as a technical specialist for complex design assignments
- Utilize project controls for project cost, schedule, and quality
- Apply department design and drafting standards
- Recognize and communicate project scope, specifications, design criteria, and design changes
- Provide on-site assistance during startup
- Provide technical guidance to less experienced drafting personnel
- Coordinate work activities with staff members and the discipline lead
- Produce mechanical and piping installation specifications with engineering review and approval
- Lead and coordinate design staff to achieve scope, schedule, and budget objectives
- Mentor subordinates
- Participate in squad checks to ensure coordination between design disciplines
- Check calculations for accuracy, code and specification conformance, design criteria, and good engineering practice
- Determine construction quantities and provide construction cost estimates
- Delegate work based on designers' technical skills and experience and follow up to support efficient progress and quality
- Consult with design leaders from other disciplines and follow up for support
- Participate in planning training programs, continuing education opportunities, and staff professional development
Requirements
What you’ll need- Associate degree in Engineering Technology or Computer-Aided Drafting is required
- SPED (Society of Piping Engineers and Designers) Certification is preferred
- 20 or more years of relevant industrial experience in mechanical/piping drafting and design
- Knowledge and application of piping materials
- Design of moderately complex process and utility piping systems
- Knowledge and application of piping supports and restraints
- Flexibility analysis of piping systems
- Knowledge of manual valve sizing
- Knowledge of design practices for sizing piping systems
- Sizing of compressible fluid piping systems
- Identification, application, and specification of steam traps and liquid drainers
- Identification, application, and specification of safety valves and devices
- Selection of piping specialty items according to design criteria
- Drafting of P&IDs and GAs
- Design of piping-specific equipment and inline instrumentation arrangements
- Familiarity with construction bulk materials and equipment specifications and installation details
- Ability to create mechanical/piping installation documents from vendor equipment drawings
- Knowledge of workflow and information flow between disciplines
- Knowledge of schedule constraints and information requirements for mechanical/piping deliverables
- Ability to estimate task completion accurately
- Ability to develop mechanical/piping installation specifications with engineering review and approval
- Ability to develop construction cost estimates, detailed engineering schedules, and man-hour budgets
- Knowledge and application of company engineering design and CAD drafting standards
- Ability to lead a small team
- Ability to deliver presentations of Hargrove Engineers & Constructors services
- Working knowledge of 2D AutoCAD and MicroStation
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Strong presentation skills
- Highly developed virtual team skills and cross-divisional relationships
- Ability to provide interoffice execution support without supervision
