About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead the safe and efficient operation of production at the Springfield, Oregon plant
  • Provide leadership and direction to the workforce, including recruiting and training employees
  • Coordinate process efficiencies, process and project engineering, and implementation of company policies and programs
  • Act as Springfield Site Leader in the Site Leader’s absence
  • Interface with regulators and government agencies
  • Maintain and improve plant operating guides and ensure adequate employee training
  • Emphasize safety and ensure compliance with the Hexion Safety Manual
  • Oversee incident investigations, process hazard analyses, operator certification check sheets, and annual procedure reviews
  • Lead and support safety investigations
  • Coordinate operations to maintain quality programs, ISO, and Responsible Care certifications
  • Investigate quality problems and prevent recurrence using structured problem-solving techniques
  • Ensure environmental regulatory and company-policy compliance
  • Interact with the community and regulatory agencies on environmental issues
  • Provide technical expertise to emergency responders
  • Identify environmental improvement opportunities and report incidents
  • Coordinate operations with the plant maintenance program
  • Issue and coordinate work orders and maintenance activities
  • Investigate maintenance problems and improve reliability and unit performance
  • Ensure preventive maintenance and authorized plant shutdowns are completed
  • Identify and implement cost-saving projects and procedures
  • Prioritize operational needs for Site Leader, Engineering, Maintenance, and corporate resources
  • Improve operations to minimize waste and downtime
  • Complete inventory reporting and maintain appropriate inventory levels
  • Use Lean Six Sigma to optimize production flow and cost
  • Improve cycle times, batch performance, and yields with Product Engineering, Authors, Quality, and CI personnel
  • Manage Operations Associate overtime and production schedules
  • Become a subject matter expert on the overall Spray Dry process
  • Ensure policy compliance and identify and provide employee training
  • Manage Operations Progression and Cross Training programs
  • Manage crew structure and balance crew skills
  • Facilitate employee involvement in team activities
  • Lead hiring of hourly production employees
  • Recognize good performance and provide corrective feedback
  • Manage 3–4 Production Supervisors and align their work with site objectives
  • Conduct annual performance appraisals

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in an industrial manufacturing facility, preferably chemical manufacturing
  • Previous supervision experience managing direct and indirect reports
  • Experience in a multidisciplinary environment coordinating Operations with Engineering, Maintenance, Supply Chain, EHS, and other COE departments
  • Experience with inventory management
  • Experience with ISO or similar quality management systems
  • Strong organizational, leadership, analytical, and communication capabilities
  • Excellent computer literacy, particularly with Excel
  • Experience with SAP or similar ERP systems beneficial
  • Experience with Six Sigma/Lean Manufacturing principles preferred
  • Knowledge of safety, environmental, and industrial hygiene rules and regulations an asset
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing demands
  • Ability to coordinate emergency situations
  • Highly motivated self-starter
  • Willingness to travel in North America, less than 10%
  • College degree in engineering or technical discipline, with significant relevant experience considered in lieu of a degree
  • Safety Sensitive Site: Fit for Duty, Fitness Compatible requirement
  • Ability to wear full and half face respirators
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions
  • Ability to handle weights up to 55 lbs
  • Visual acuity to distinguish colors
  • Ability to understand instructions and underlying principles
  • Ability to perform arithmetic operations quickly and accurately
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate in English
  • Ability to motivate a team and implement change
  • Ability to accept responsibility, remain calm under stress, and adapt to changing duties
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Successful completion of a drug test and background investigation required
  • Authorization for periodic background checks as required by CFATS or other regulations
