About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Set up, operate, and administer respiratory care equipment and procedures for diagnosis and treatment of respiratory disease in general floor and critical care areas
- Evaluate therapeutic objectives and outcomes and transcribe physicians’ verbal orders in the medical record
- Set up, operate, and monitor mechanical ventilators; make ordered changes and maintain artificial airway patency, stability, location, and humidification
- Transport mechanically ventilated patients to other patient care areas
- Perform respiratory care treatments and oxygen administration in adult, pediatric, and neonatal areas
- Explain and instruct patients and families on therapies and procedures
- Perform arterial punctures, arterial blood gas analysis, co-oximetry, electrolytes, and related diagnostic calculations
- Perform quality control and proficiency testing on analyzers; verify, document, and report results, including critical values
- Gather and transport equipment, verify orders and patient identity, prepare prescribed pharmacological solutions, and document treatments and patient responses
- Assess neonatal, pediatric, and adult patients and establish the appropriate level of respiratory care
- Assist physicians with bedside procedures and transcribe verbal orders
- Perform bag-and-mask ventilation, maintain airways, and attend resuscitations and traumas
- Perform basic and, where applicable, complete pulmonary function testing and oximetry testing
- Clean, disinfect, sterilize, package, troubleshoot, and coordinate repair or preventative maintenance of respiratory care equipment
Requirements
What you’ll need- Associates of a 2 year AMA approved Respiratory Care program. Required
- 6 months experience for Network float position Required
- Basic Life Support (BLS) - Certification Certification Required
- Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) - License Licensed Required
- Respiratory Therapist - Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) - License Registered Respiratory Therapist Required
- Bachelors of a 4 year Bachelor level or AMA approved Respiratory Care program. Preferred
- 1 year clinical experience Preferred
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) - Certification Advanced Cardiac Life Support Preferred
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) - Certification Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) or -campus specific Preferred
- Credential from National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC). Preferred
- Proficiency operating numerous mechanical ventilators and mechanical ventilation modes
- Ability to perform arterial puncture, blood gas analysis, co-oximetry, electrocardiograms, electrolytes, and basic pulmonary function testing
