About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Drive the long-term technical vision of the platform and guide the design, build, and evolution of scalable, reliable systems across multiple squads
Serve as the Engineering Director's primary technical partner and a technical partner to Engineering Managers and Product leadership
Own the organization's most complex technical challenges while mentoring engineers across the organization
Cover six core product squads in Poland: Scheduling, Estimates, Service Plans, Recurring Jobs, Customers, and Online Booking
Guide the transition from a monolithic Ruby on Rails application toward a modern, distributed, event-driven, domain-oriented architecture
Act as the Engineering Director's technical eyes across multiple squads by identifying risks, concerns, ideas, and issues in code, pull requests, and designs
Drive application performance, quality, and responsiveness across core domain systems
Collaborate with development teams, engineering leaders, and architects on high-performance, scalable, reliable architecture
Establish subsystem boundaries and recommend functionality placement across subsystems
Develop and maintain code quality standards; conduct code and architectural reviews; coach teams on system design principles
Drive architectural enhancements and strategic refactoring for scalability and maintainability
Guide teams in designing automated tests at optimal architectural layers
Maintain and improve CI/CD environments
Mentor engineers across the organization
Lead cross-squad initiatives and represent domains in company-wide architecture discussions

Requirements

What you’ll need

9+ years of experience designing, building, and operating complex production systems
Deep experience with modern backend frameworks, such as Ruby on Rails, Django, or Spring Boot
Proficiency in multiple programming languages, such as JavaScript, Python, Go, Java, or Node.js
Deep expertise with cloud platforms, containerization, and serverless/cloud-native architectures
Proven success applying Domain-Driven Design (DDD) principles across multiple teams or domains
Experience architecting and building event-driven systems using distributed messaging tools, such as Kafka or SQS
Experience defining and improving CI/CD pipelines, such as Jenkins or GitLab, and automated testing strategies
Expertise in scalable API design and management, such as RESTful APIs or GraphQL
Strong background in system observability practices and performance diagnostics
Proven experience driving team efficiency or output quality through the strategic use of AI tools and automation
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent work experience
Ownership mentality with a balance of urgency and long-term system health
A multi-dimensional background with breadth of cross-functional interests or depth of specialized mastery
Personal resilience to learn from scratch and thrive in ambiguity
Comfort with frequent context switching across a large, business-critical organization
Ability to quickly build deep knowledge of a large, complex system
Strong written communication and a track record of influencing without authority and coaching senior engineers across teams
