About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Own the architecture of the satellite-to-ground link across X-band and Ka-band payload downlink and S-band command and control
- Measure constellation output against theoretical capacity and lead work to close the gap
- Design data movement from ground stations to customers, including latency tiers and delivery accounting
- Build alongside software engineers, contributing code and reviews
- Lead technical initiatives across team boundaries and align teams on link and data path decisions
- Grow satellite communications expertise through mentoring, design reviews and shared standards
- Own the end-to-end communication stack from design through production across cloud, on-premises and real hardware
- Work across link budgets, modulation and coding, spectrum constraints, schedulers, distributed systems and production operations
Requirements
What you’ll need- Communications engineering experience on at least one flown mission, including personally diagnosing an anomaly on a live satellite
- High-rate payload downlink experience in X-band or Ka-band, beyond S-band command and control
- Ability to build and defend a link budget, including EIRP, G/T, Eb/N0, margin, rain fade, and elevation constraints
- Practical CCSDS knowledge, including transfer frames, virtual channels, synchronisation and channel coding, and file delivery
- Experience owning data movement from a ground station to its point of consumption, with latency and completeness guarantees
- Hands-on coding in Python, Go, C++ or similar
- Active use of AI-assisted development tools is desirable
- Experience with fleet-scale contact planning and scheduling across commercial ground station networks is desirable
- Experience with DVB-S2/S2X and adaptive coding and modulation is desirable
- Experience with delay-tolerant networking or store-and-forward file delivery is desirable
- SDR and DSP experience, including GNU Radio, FPGA or RFSoC, is desirable
- Awareness of spectrum regulation and coordination is desirable
- Employment is subject to applicable security screening, including SUPO where required
