About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead enterprise strategy development and evolve Illumina’s long-term direction and strategic priorities
  • Translate market, customer, scientific, technology, competitive, and financial developments into strategic implications
  • Frame ambiguous executive decisions into defined decisions, alternatives, criteria, and analytical workplans
  • Independently lead high-priority, cross-enterprise strategy initiatives from initial framing through executive decision
  • Build and pressure-test an enterprise fact base integrating market, customer, competitive, scientific, technology, operational, and financial perspectives
  • Develop strategic alternatives and quantify growth, investment, risk, organizational requirements, and opportunity cost
  • Integrate functional and regional perspectives while maintaining an independent enterprise point of view
  • Prepare decision-ready materials for the Executive Team and Board
  • Facilitate executive discussions, challenge senior leaders constructively, and support leadership decision-making
  • Lead and coach multi-level project teams and develop strategy talent
  • Translate strategic decisions into implications, owners, milestones, and measures of value
  • Partner with Corporate Development when inorganic options are relevant
  • Manage and develop senior strategy professionals, set quality standards, allocate work, provide feedback and coaching, and support career development

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, economics, finance, engineering, life sciences, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • Prior background in a top consulting firm
  • 10+ years in corporate strategy, top-tier strategy consulting, or equivalent senior strategic roles
  • 5+ years directly advising C-suite executives or equivalent enterprise decision-makers
  • 5+ years independently leading complex, high-ambiguity, cross-functional strategy engagements
  • 3+ years leading and coaching multi-person, multi-level strategy teams
  • Advanced structured problem-solving, quantitative analysis, financial modeling, scenario development, synthesis, and executive communication skills
  • Ability to form an independent point of view, challenge assumptions constructively, and influence senior stakeholders across a complex global matrix
  • Strong commercial and financial judgment
  • Ability to understand complex scientific and technology-driven markets and translate them into enterprise implications
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 20%
  • Flexibility to support time-sensitive ELT or Board decision cycles across global time zones
  • MBA, master’s degree, or other relevant advanced degree preferred
  • Experience in genomics, life sciences, diagnostics, healthcare, or another technology-intensive industry preferred
  • Experience with Board-level strategy discussions preferred
  • Combination of external advisory and in-house corporate strategy experience preferred
  • Experience evaluating partnerships, acquisitions, or other inorganic options preferred
