About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide direct genetic counseling services to patients, applicable patient care specialists, and referring physicians
  • Interpret family and medical histories to assess disease occurrence or recurrence risk
  • Educate patients about genetic concepts, inheritance, testing, management, prevention, resources, and research
  • Complete interview histories and counsel patients referred for genetic testing and other circumstances
  • Obtain medical records and prepare family pedigrees
  • Use medical literature to analyze genetic disorders for individualized patient care
  • Provide individualized patient and family education, emotional support, and counseling
  • Analyze options for diagnostic testing, care, intervention, and future ramifications
  • Document patient contacts, ancillary services, communications, and counseling
  • Complete documentation supporting billing requirements
  • Participate in case conferences and other meetings
  • Consult with patient care specialists and referring providers to develop collaborative care plans
  • Provide education to Intermountain Healthcare staff about genetic counseling topics
  • Create educational materials for patients and providers
  • Support clinic-specific workflow standardization
  • Participate in Intermountain research or project committees and specialty-focused research
  • Supervise and/or educate genetic counseling graduate students as opportunities arise

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Master's degree from an accredited genetic counseling program
  • Genetic counseling certification from the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) and state license eligible
  • Certification by the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) or ABGC required within two years of hire
  • Broad knowledge of current developments in treating, diagnosing, and counseling in genetics
  • Ability to research and review scientific literature and publications
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Experience using PowerPoint, word processing, spreadsheet, database, internet, e-mail, and scheduling applications
  • Proficiency in genetic counseling skills
  • Desire for additional professional development
  • Ability to see and read information, labels, documents, and monitors
  • Ability to verbally communicate and hear and understand spoken information
  • Manual dexterity to manipulate complex and delicate supplies and equipment
  • For roles requiring driving, ability to drive a vehicle
