About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Design, build, and run backend services in Go and Python, owning delivery, monitoring, and on-call responsibilities.
Build and evolve backend services running LLM-based agents, including tool calling, MCP integrations, structured output, conversation state, and code-based guardrails.
Build internal web applications in React and TypeScript, from admin pages to complex interactive interfaces.
Support and develop existing production services through reviews, on-call work, fixes, and new features.
Design data models and APIs for configuration-heavy products, ensuring consistency, history, and safe changes.
Integrate services with the wider backend through HTTP, gRPC, GraphQL, and Kafka communication.
Build end-to-end observability through metrics, logs, dashboards, tracing, alerting, and runbooks.
Drive technical research and design for new features and document trade-offs.
Participate in code and design reviews, raise engineering standards, mentor engineers, and review AI-generated changes to the same standard as human-generated changes.
Collaborate with data scientists, backend engineers, QA, and product managers.

Requirements

What you’ll need

5+ years of commercial software engineering experience, with production work on both backend and frontend.
Production coding experience without coding agents.
Strong Go, including advanced production features.
Strong Python for service code, including async, typing, testing, and a modern web framework such as FastAPI.
Hands-on experience building and running AI agents in production.
Strong TypeScript and React, including non-trivial web applications, complex forms, editors, and data visualisation.
Strong SQL, including schema design, indexes, query optimisation, and migrations.
Experience with Redis or similar key-value stores.
Experience with HTTP, gRPC, GraphQL, and Kafka, focusing on reliable synchronous and asynchronous communication.
Docker, CI/CD pipelines, and working Kubernetes knowledge.
Experience with AWS/GCP core services, including compute, storage, networking, and IAM.
Experience designing and running observability using metrics, logging, dashboards, tracing, alerting, and runbooks; Prometheus, Grafana, or OpenTelemetry or similar.
Git workflows and code review experience.
Comfortable with the Linux command line and networking basics.
Ability to explain trade-offs clearly to data scientists, product owners, and on-call engineers.
Experience using AI coding agents with full review of generated changes.
