About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Complete limited-duration training to develop the knowledge and skills required to become an IndyGo Professional Bus Operator
- Learn to operate transit buses in revenue and non-revenue service while complying with IndyGo policies, procedures, Federal and Indiana traffic laws, and defensive-driving requirements
- Learn to perform pre-trip inspections, including visual inspection and testing of equipment, operating/safety devices, and bus controls
- Conduct end-of-service inspections, collect and turn in lost items, check for sleeping passengers, and return route schedules to the operator’s lounge
- Learn and maintain knowledge of streets, current bus routes, stops, fare structure, and bus pass programs within the service area
- Learn to comply with ADA requirements, assist passengers with disabilities, secure wheelchairs and mobility devices, and announce designated or requested stops
- Successfully pass the CDL Skills Exam, if applicable
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Represent IndyGo professionally and provide safe, reliable, courteous service to customers
Requirements
What you’ll need- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Valid Operators/Chauffeurs/Commercial Driver’s License
- Valid Commercial Driver’s Permit preferred
- Valid Indiana CDL with Passenger and Airbrake Endorsements preferred
- Strong documented experience in customer service
- Knowledge of and ability to use standard defensive driving techniques
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing
- Above-average decision-making and problem-solving abilities
- Basic mathematical abilities
- Ability to tell time and keep a timely schedule
- Ability to read and understand maps, routes, and timetables
- Ability to work unusual hours, split shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Ability to work in various outdoor weather conditions and environments with dust, fumes, exhaust, noise, temperatures, and chemicals
- Must be able to sit for long periods within a defined workspace
- Must occasionally move and position yourself to conduct inspections and secure wheelchairs
- Must be comfortable transporting individuals with service animals
- Must successfully complete required DOT pre-employment screenings, including drug and alcohol testing and legally required post-offer physical testing
- Subject to federally mandated random drug and alcohol testing throughout employment
