About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead improvements to how Ironclad engineers build, test, and ship software
  • Own local development tooling, build and test systems, release automation, and the Backstage developer portal
  • Shape the team’s technical direction and roadmap
  • Identify development bottlenecks and turn them into practical tools and features
  • Lead implementation, adoption, and feedback-driven improvements
  • Make JavaScript/TypeScript builds and tests faster and more reliable across webpack, Jest, and Vitest
  • Improve the Bazel build system, including remote caching, and lead the migration off NX
  • Build Kubernetes tooling for independent routine application changes
  • Own the path from commit to production, including CI, Kargo environment promotion, verification, and rollback
  • Extend Backstage with plugins connecting deployment, monitoring, and incident data
  • Improve the speed and consistency of local development environments
  • Use build times, CI reliability, lead time, and deployment frequency to prioritize improvements
  • Set the technical roadmap with other engineering teams and keep leadership informed of priorities, progress, and tradeoffs
  • Lead technical discussions and mentor engineers
  • Participate in the team’s support rotation

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Staff: 8+ years of software engineering experience; Senior Staff: 12+ years
  • At least 3 years in SRE, infrastructure, build systems, CI/CD, or developer tooling
  • Deep experience with JavaScript and TypeScript build and test tools, such as webpack, Jest, or Vitest
  • Experience diagnosing slow builds and flaky tests at scale
  • Production experience with Kubernetes and containers on GCP, AWS, or Azure
  • Experience with CI systems such as CircleCI or GitHub Actions
  • Strong programming skills in TypeScript, Go, or Python
  • Comfort with shell scripting
  • Experience leading technical projects requiring adoption across teams, as a tech lead or engineering manager while staying hands-on
  • Clear written communication, including design documents, technical proposals, and migration guides
  • Alignment with Ironclad’s values: drive, intent, integrity, and empathy
  • San Francisco Bay Area proximity and willingness to commute to the office two days a week
  • Authorization to work lawfully in the United States
