About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead and grow a team of engineers building production generative AI systems
  • Balance hands-on technical leadership with people support
  • Own the technical roadmap and quality bar for the team's systems
  • Partner with product management and work across teams to translate customer and business needs into technical deliverables
  • Write design documents, drive architectural decisions, and write production code for high-leverage or high-risk problems
  • Review design decisions, unblock engineers, and make prioritization calls
  • Establish and uphold standards for code quality, testing, eval-driven development, and production monitoring
  • Manage prioritization and tradeoffs across competing priorities
  • Coordinate with adjacent teams whose work depends on the team's systems
  • Hire, mentor, and develop engineers
  • Run performance and career development for direct reports
  • Potentially scale a team through a significant architectural transition

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Proven experience leading engineering teams as a manager, with a track record of shipping production systems
  • Strong technical background in generative AI / LLM-based systems
  • Ability to work directly as a technical contributor, creating designs and implementing solutions
  • Experience operating production ML/LLM systems, including eval-driven development, reliability and output-quality monitoring, and staged rollouts
  • Experience in one or more of NLP, content/document understanding, search/retrieval, agent frameworks, or LLM training infrastructure/frameworks
  • Track record of hiring, mentoring, and growing engineers
  • Experience navigating performance and leveling conversations directly
  • Strong cross-functional partnership skills
  • Ability to set a technical roadmap with product, engineering leads, and company leadership
  • Comfort operating in a dynamic, fast-paced, outcome-driven environment with ambiguity
  • Familiarity with canary rollouts for ML/LLM systems is a plus
  • Must be authorized to work lawfully in the United States
  • Must be based within a commutable distance of the listed office and willing to commute into the office two days a week
