Key responsibilities & impact

Collaborate with Designers, Product Managers, and Software Engineers to build and maintain user experience, accessibility, and development feasibility for websites, applications, and supporting digital spaces.
Design and implement innovative solutions for presenting data and content across websites, mobile apps, and other platforms.
Adhere to JoVE’s brand standards across websites, supporting digital spaces, and third-party platforms.
Stay updated on web standards, changes, and web design and development trends.
Contribute to engineering excellence, including automated unit testing.
Collaborate with stakeholders and developers on project design and implementation, maintaining standards and creating a reusable codebase.
Complete tasks independently and on time while meeting requirements and expectations.
Explain and whiteboard complex technical issues to audiences with varying technical expertise.
Debug software components and identify code defects for remediation.
Assist in automating deployments to development and other environments.

Requirements

What you’ll need

7+ years of experience building scalable, data-driven backend systems and APIs.
At least 2 years of experience in a technical leadership role, leading and mentoring engineering teams.
Strong proficiency in server-side programming (Node.js) - Must have.
Familiarity with frontend technologies: React, JavaScript/TypeScript, CSS.
Strong understanding of system design, data architecture, and microservices or modular monoliths.
Skilled in designing and implementing RESTful APIs and integrating with third-party services and external SDKs.
Experience with event-driven systems, asynchronous processing, and message queues (Kafka, SNS/SQS, RabbitMQ, etc.).
Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases, including PostgreSQL, MongoDB, and Redis, with ability to optimize queries and model complex data relationships.
Solid experience with cloud-native architecture using AWS (serverless, ECS/Fargate, Lambda, S3, CloudFormation, etc.) or equivalent platforms.
Demonstrated understanding and implementation of SOLID and DRY software design principles with SaaS and multi-tenancy application development.
Familiarity with Agile Scrum software development and related collaboration and issue-tracking tools such as JIRA and Rally.
Experience working in a Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery model, including GitHub and CI pipeline automation tools.
Ability to triage and resolve incidents and lead incident investigations.
