About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Support a portfolio of SPAR mentors throughout each fellowship round
- Serve as the main point of contact and check in with mentors regularly
- Help mentors scope projects, set expectations with mentees, and keep teams on track
- Coach first-time mentors on effective meetings, feedback, and managing mentees with varying experience levels
- Handle team conflicts, absentee mentees, and breakdowns in mentor relationships
- Advise mentors on sharing research outputs, including suitable publications, workshops, and conference venues
- Contribute to mentor recruitment, onboarding, and support processes
- Help improve research quality across SPAR as it grows
- Work closely with SPAR’s program lead
- Travel 3–6 times per year for conferences and events, predominantly in the US
Requirements
What you’ll need- Substantial research experience, such as a PhD, a research role, or several completed projects
- Strong interpersonal judgment for handling delicate conversations
- Clear written and verbal communication skills
- Strong organization and ability to track commitments and meet deadlines
- Familiarity with the AI safety ecosystem and major research agendas
- Ability to engage with both technical and policy research
- Mission alignment with reducing risks from advanced AI
- Experience mentoring or managing junior researchers is valued but not required
- Publications at ML conferences or in AI policy venues are valued but not required
- Research experience in AI safety or AI governance is valued but not required
- Ability to attend meetings in the ET time zone is preferred
- Visa sponsorship may be available for US visas and likely UK visas, but approvals are not guaranteed
