About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Record deposits, enter and pay bills, prepare invoices, and process bi-monthly payroll from timesheets
- Advise the Executive Director on financial matters
- Run month-end close, including reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, prepaids, receivables, refundable advances and restricted net assets
- Reconcile corporate credit cards, review accounts payable, and manage fixed asset and depreciation schedules
- Prepare monthly financial statements and finance packets
- Review actual-to-budget variances and update cash flow forecasts
- Present financial reports to the Finance Committee and prepare minutes
- Prepare Board reports and attend Board meetings
- Work with the Investment Committee and Investment Manager
- Review contracts and maintain and update the internal controls policy manual
- Complete annual 1099 filings, workers' compensation audit, forecasts, budget, cash flow, 403(b) calculations and notifications
- Close year-end books, prepare audit schedules, liaise with auditors, and review audited financial statements
- Review and submit Form 990 and coordinate Form 5500 submission
Requirements
What you’ll need- Previous experience as a Controller or Finance Director
- Hands-on, end-to-end accounting experience: AP, deposits, invoicing, payroll, month-end close, reconciliations, journal entries, accruals and financial statement preparation
- Experience with budgeting, cash flow forecasting and variance analysis
- Experience preparing audit schedules and working with external auditors
- Working knowledge of Form 990 and Form 5500 filings, 403(b) plan administration and workers' compensation audits
- Confidence presenting financial information to committees and Boards
- Strong understanding of internal controls
- Able to work independently and manage a variable, deadline-driven workload in a small team
- Nonprofit or 501(c)(3) finance experience, including fund accounting, grants and restricted net assets (preferred)
- CPA (preferred, not required)
- Based in the Los Angeles area (preferred)
- Experience working with investment committees or investment managers (preferred)

- Estimated annual earnings: about $52,000 to $62,000, based on an average of 10 to 12 hours per week (pay depends on actual hours worked)
