About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Assist in the development and execution of the Company’s Government Affairs strategy
- Build and maintain relationships with officials and staff at the federal, state, and local level
- Maintain relationships with Company business units to identify emerging issues and recommend plans to address them
- Develop Government Affairs materials with the Communications Department for internal and external audiences
- Monitor, analyze, and comment on federal, state, and local legislative and regulatory activity
- Identify emerging public policy trends, assess business impacts, and recommend advocacy priorities, risk mitigation strategies, and stakeholder engagement plans
- Draft and distribute memos or releases and generate department awareness
- Assist the organization at local meetings and support the VP in advocating for organizational interests before legislative or relevant bodies
- Coordinate and oversee external lobbyists and trade associations
- Serve as company contact and liaison for legislative and public policy matters with government and industry groups
- Prepare policy briefings and testimony for pending legislative actions and provide thought leadership and recommendations
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor's Degree in Political Science, Public Policy, Government, Law, Business, Agriculture, Communications, or related discipline
- 6+ years experience in governmental affairs activity at any level, either in a company or at a trade association or from within government
- Ability to understand technical language in legislative or regulatory proposals that could impact Company operations
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
- Exceptional interpersonal and verbal communication and active listening skills
- Strong understanding of food and agriculture industry
- Ability to establish and maintain strong relationships and work collaboratively with others at all levels of the organization
- Ability to work independently and with minimal direction
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity
- Ability to perform complex tasks and determine appropriate processes with some latitude
- Ability to administer departmental policies and procedures, evaluate results and performance, and assist with development of budgets, strategic plans, or policies
- Ability to handle confidential information and data requiring care and discretion
- Self-starter with a sense of urgency, ability to multi-task, handle unanticipated situations effectively, and work well under pressure with tight deadlines
