About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide expertise and support to departmental attorneys in the Litigation & Trial Department, focusing on the Supreme Court & Appellate Practice Group
- Oversee logistical and administrative work associated with appellate litigation
- Research and ensure compliance with court rules
- Shepardize, cite check, and format legal briefs
- Prepare appendices
- Interface with clerks' offices at federal and state appellate courts
- Prepare templates of legal briefs and motions
- Assist with filing and printing legal briefs, motions, and other documents
- Maintain case calendars and organize case documents
- Ensure compliance with court procedural rules
- Contribute to and/or manage multiple litigation teams
- Identify and resolve outstanding issues throughout each case
- Collaborate with partners, counsel, associates, appellate paralegals, litigation services, legal secretaries, support staff, and outside vendors on confidential tasks
- Promote effective work practices and teamwork
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
- Signed declaration or paralegal certificate from an ABA-approved paralegal program if located in a California office
- Prior appellate paralegal experience at a law firm, in government service, or equivalent, preferably
- High aptitude for reading, cite checking, and editing complex legal briefs
- Superb attention to detail
- Working knowledge of state-level and federal-level filing requirements
- Knowledge of document management, Bluebooking, Shepardizing, and cite checking
- Proficiency with applications used in a legal office environment, including billing software and databases
- Ability to protect and maintain highly sensitive, confidential, privileged, financial, and proprietary information
