About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Work on flagship programmes including DragonFire, the UK’s first Laser Directed Energy Weapon, GCAP, and world-leading targeting lasers
  • Model novel concepts and mature technologies
  • Perform precision alignment during integration
  • Conduct system-level verification
  • Develop optical-mechanical concepts, including system architecture definition, lens designs, analysis and performance simulations
  • Model or design imaging lenses and optical systems using commercial tools such as ZEMAX OpticStudio, CodeV or equivalent
  • Develop test processes for engineering and technician teams building and aligning electro-optical systems
  • Develop and support system verification processes addressing performance and safety requirements
  • Investigate new technologies and engineering capabilities for emerging business opportunities
  • Develop work packages, milestones and deliverables within project teams and own those work packages
  • Engage with procurement to identify suppliers or support supplier quality issues
  • Collaborate with experienced optical designers and the wider Advanced Targeting Sector

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Relevant graduate-level qualifications demonstrating classical optics principles
  • Techniques for lens design and optical analysis using commercial tools such as Ansys OpticStudio, CodeV, Fred or equivalent
  • Experience of new product development involving an optical-mechanical system
  • Development or verification of infrared optical systems or multi-waveband optical systems
  • Methods used to investigate optical transmission or reflectance of different optical coatings
  • Methods used for stray light analysis and control
  • Optical techniques for measuring transmitted wavefront error
  • Optical design of fiber to free-space optics
  • Experience designing across a range of temperatures and environments
  • Subject to pre-employment screening in line with the UK Government’s BPSS
  • May need to meet eligibility requirements for SC or DV National Security Vetting
