About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Assist the special education teacher with students’ physical and instructional needs in inclusive and special education settings
  • Prepare instructional materials
  • Maintain administrative records and prepare required reports
  • Provide assistance to substitute teachers
  • Assist students with physical disabilities, including lifting as needed
  • Help manage student behavior
  • Support instructional needs according to Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs)
  • Assist with personal care as appropriate
  • Learn and adapt to each student’s special needs
  • Work with individual students or small groups
  • Supervise students throughout the school day inside and outside the classroom
  • Inform the teacher of students’ special needs or problems
  • Maintain confidentiality

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High School diploma or GED
  • Ability to work with children with disabilities
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Knowledge of general office equipment
  • Must complete SBEC certification process to obtain an Educational Aide Certification if hired
  • Ability to work in a stressful environment and with frequent interruptions
  • Must be able to lift 25 lbs
  • Ability to frequently stand, stoop, bend, kneel, push, and pull
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to support and document behavioral intervention strategies and/or provide school health, related, and personal care services as needed
