Key responsibilities & impact
  • Assist the special education teacher in providing appropriate learning activities and experiences for students with disabilities
  • Provide inclusion support, academic and behavior support, positive behavior supports, and social and interpersonal learning support
  • Help prepare instructional materials
  • Help maintain administrative records and prepare required reports
  • Provide assistance to substitute teachers
  • Assist students with physical disabilities according to their needs
  • Help manage student behavior
  • Support students’ instructional needs in accordance with their Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs)
  • Assist students with personal care as appropriate
  • Learn and adapt to each student’s special needs
  • Work with individual students or small groups
  • Supervise students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom
  • Inform the teacher of individual students’ special needs or problems
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Participate in staff development training programs and special events as assigned
  • Implement, support, and document behavioral intervention strategies and/or provide school health, related, and personal care services as needed

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • GED or High School Diploma
  • Associate degree or two years of higher education preferred
  • Must register with SBEC to obtain an Educational Aide Certification
  • Ability to work with children with disabilities
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Knowledge of general office equipment
  • Flexibility with situations that require a change in schedule
  • Ability to assist with positioning students with physical disabilities, which may require some lifting
  • Ability to maintain emotional control under stress
  • Districtwide travel may be required
  • Hours may vary
  • Ability to fulfill all assigned responsibilities and duties
