About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Assist the special education teacher with the physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities
- Help prepare instructional materials
- Help maintain administrative records and prepare required reports
- Provide assistance to substitute teachers
- Assist students with physical disabilities according to their needs
- Help manage student behavior
- Support students’ instructional needs according to their Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs)
- Assist students with personal care as appropriate
- Learn and adapt to each student’s special needs
- Work with individual students or small groups
- Supervise students throughout the school day inside and outside the classroom
- Keep the teacher informed of individual students’ special needs or problems
- Maintain confidentiality
- Participate in staff development training programs and special events as assigned
- Fulfill all assigned responsibilities and duties
Requirements
What you’ll need- High School diploma or GED
- Associates degree or two years of higher education preferred
- If hired, must complete SBEC certification process to obtain an Educational Aide Certification
- Ability to work with children with disabilities
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
- Ability to communicate effectively
- Knowledge of general office equipment
- Must be able to lift 25lbs
- Ability to perform frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, pulling, lifting, and transferring students to and from wheelchairs
- Ability to assist with positioning students with physical disabilities
- Ability to work with frequent interruptions and maintain emotional control under stress
- Exposure to biological hazards
- Ability to assume shared responsibility for student and adult health, safety, and confidentiality
- Ability to implement, support, and document behavioral intervention strategies and/or provide school health, related, and personal care services
