About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Lead engineering teams supporting platforms for USDA Child Nutrition Programs, claims, compliance, and reporting for state agencies
Partner with Product, Software Engineers, and Quality Assurance Engineers to turn business priorities into reliable, high-quality software
Plan, drive, and monitor progress across multiple projects and initiatives
Communicate project details, impact, and status to technology leadership and product stakeholders
Remove team impediments and provide realistic solutions to obstacles
Lead development and QA while supporting business goals, employee retention, and well-being
Plan staffing across development and QA and realign resources as needed
Define, implement, and maintain software development and QA processes and methodologies
Drive initiatives improving delivery efficiency and quality
Define and implement software development processes and best practices with engineering, QA, and Product
Identify skill sets, interview and assess candidates, provide selection feedback, and support onboarding
Conduct regular career-growth and work-progress discussions and provide ongoing feedback
Foster learning from mistakes and reduce recurrence risk
Establish team goals, standards, and objectives; review key metrics and hold the team accountable
Coach team members and provide opportunities for growth and delegated responsibility
Participate in incident postmortems and provide actionable feedback
Perform additional assigned tasks

Requirements

What you’ll need

8+ years of experience in software application development, including 3+ years leading engineering teams
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience
Experience working with Product to plan, prioritize, and deliver in an agile or scrum environment
Experience with modernization or migration of legacy applications, ideally .NET and Angular
Strong understanding of software quality practices, including unit, integration, and end-to-end testing
Experience recruiting, hiring, coaching, and developing engineers
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with all stakeholders
Comfort with on-call responsibilities and incident response
Experience with or comparable knowledge of .NET WebForms, jQuery, Telerik ASP.NET AJAX UI Controls, .NET Framework 4.8, C#, and Microsoft SQL Server is a plus
Experience in or strong eagerness to learn Angular 17+, .NET 10/C#, CQRS (MediatR), FluentValidation, PostgreSQL/AWS Aurora PostgreSQL, AWS ECS Fargate, ElastiCache (Redis), Secrets Manager, OAuth2/OIDC authentication with Amazon Cognito, Hangfire or similar, GitHub Actions CI/CD, EF Core Migrations or FluentMigrator, and LaunchDarkly
Less than 10% travel requirement
