About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Lead a unit within the Controller department of Finance, such as Accounting Policy or Corporate Reporting
Manage operations related to financial information and regulatory reporting
Make recommendations and decisions regarding accounting policies and interpretations
Research technical accounting issues and interpret and implement new technical accounting standards affecting the department and the bank’s financial status
Lead the department through subordinate managers to ensure accurate, timely filing of external and internal financial reporting
Manage monthly and quarterly processes and apply comprehensive knowledge to process decisions
Exercise managerial authority over staffing, performance appraisals, promotions, salary recommendations, performance management, and terminations
Adhere to risk and regulatory standards, policies, and controls; design, implement, maintain, and enhance internal controls
Identify risk-related issues requiring escalation to management
Promote an environment that supports belonging and reflects the M&T Bank brand
Maintain internal control standards and implement internal and external audit points and applicable regulator issues
Manage subordinate managers and develop the team through professional leadership
Direct, persuade, and influence across the division and among bank peers
Complete other related duties as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need

Bachelor’s degree and a minimum 9 years’ experience in Finance, Business or a related field with 3 years’ managerial experience, or in lieu of a degree, a combined minimum of 13 years’ higher education and/or work experience with 3 years’ managerial experience
Strong organization skills with emphasis placed on detail and the ability to work effectively under time constraints
Strong analytical ability and creative problem-solving skills, including knowledge and application of GAAP
Demonstrated accuracy and timeliness
Demonstrated team work leadership
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
In-depth knowledge of the banking industry and related GAAP principles
Strong interpersonal skills and maturity to build relationships and interact from a business as well as a technical standpoint
Preferred: advanced degree in Finance, Accounting, or Business Administration
Preferred: CPA
Preferred: experience in financial planning and analysis, accounting, strategic planning with financial services industry
