About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Lead the company's product export classification and regulatory compliance efforts
- Determine and maintain export classifications for software, hardware, technology, and related services under EAR and ITAR
- Analyze product functionality, source code, encryption features, data recovery capabilities, forensic capabilities, and cryptanalytic functionality
- Prepare and maintain ECCN determinations, mass market analyses, and export classification documentation
- Assess ITAR jurisdictional issues and conduct USML analyses
- Maintain the export classification database at product, product family, feature, and version levels
- Monitor product releases and technology changes for updated classifications, licenses, or regulatory filings
- Prepare and manage CCATS submissions, Commodity Jurisdiction Requests, encryption registrations and reports, BIS and DDTC license applications, TAAs, and other export control submissions
- Coordinate with outside counsel and government agencies including BIS and DDTC
- Support audits, inquiries, investigations, and regulatory examinations
- Partner with engineering, product management, and architecture teams on roadmaps and technical changes
- Participate in design reviews, release reviews, architecture discussions, and product planning meetings
- Translate technical concepts into export control analyses and regulatory determinations
- Advise engineering teams on export-controlled technologies, deemed exports, and secure development practices
- Maintain records supporting classifications, licensing decisions, and regulatory determinations
- Develop compliance processes, training, policies, procedures, and internal controls
- Support compliance reviews involving international deployments, technology transfers, and foreign-person access
- Establish and administer export control review processes for releases, feature enhancements, architecture changes, acquisitions, and integrations
- Serve as compliance approver in product development lifecycle and release management
- Create controls to flag export-control-relevant technical changes before release
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Information Security, or related technical field
- 5-7+ years of experience in export controls, trade compliance, or regulatory compliance involving advanced technology products
- Demonstrated experience classifying software, encryption products, cybersecurity tools, digital forensic products, or other highly technical technologies
- Direct experience with EAR
- Direct experience with ITAR
- Direct experience with ECCN classification
- Direct experience with CCATS submissions
- Direct experience with Commodity Jurisdiction Requests
- Direct experience with BIS licensing
- Direct experience with DDTC licensing
- Ability to read and understand technical specifications, engineering documentation, software architecture diagrams, and source code concepts
- Strong understanding of cryptography, encryption technologies, cryptanalysis, cybersecurity, digital forensics, or related technical disciplines
- Advanced degree in engineering, cybersecurity, computer science, law, or related field (nice to have)
- Experience with digital forensics, lawful access technologies, cyber investigation tools, or intelligence-related software products (nice to have)
- Experience working directly with software engineering teams in an agile development environment (nice to have)
- Licensed attorney, Certified Export Specialist, or other trade compliance certification (nice to have)
- Satisfactory completion of a background check
