About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Coordinate and oversee Initial Services unit activities, including scheduling, workload division, mentoring/training, and performance monitoring/evaluation
  • Provide training and oversight for interns and volunteers
  • Recruit, interview, and hire initial services staff
  • Review discovery with in-custody clients at Maricopa County jails and out-of-custody clients at the office; maintain confidentiality
  • Translate and interpret discovery for Spanish-speaking clients when required
  • Track workload in the case management system
  • Communicate information and answer procedural inquiries about the criminal justice system in person and by telephone
  • Travel to Maricopa County jail locations to provide/receive and review case-related documents and obtain confidential information and inmate signatures for Public Defender personnel
  • Interpret and translate for clients and attorneys at jails, the office, and off-site locations
  • Prepare informational documents, forms, letters, and statistical data
  • Improve operations, reduce turnaround times, streamline work processes, and provide seamless client service
  • Present training and updates to employees and stakeholders and represent the department as a leader during meetings

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Five years of court, legal, or related experience
  • Ability to fluently speak, read, and write both English and Spanish
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Related post-secondary education may substitute for four years of experience on a year-for-year basis
  • Must possess or obtain a valid Arizona driver's license upon hire
  • Experience interviewing individuals in an indigent defense agency is valued
  • Prior lead and/or supervisory experience is valued
  • Must pass a pre-employment background and/or fingerprint investigation as required by statute or policy
  • Drug and alcohol testing requirements apply to positions designated as safety-sensitive
