About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead and implement the strategic development and execution of organizational goals and objectives
  • Provide leadership, direction, and support to underwriting teams and/or direct reports
  • Manage underwriting, profitability, growth, and retention of new and renewal business
  • Manage underwriting functions to achieve profit, revenue, loss ratio, and expense targets
  • Ensure effective execution of underwriting best practices
  • Delegate underwriting authority to staff via letters of authority and monitor and revise as appropriate
  • Ensure quality underwriting work consistent with authority letters, strategy, standards, and process
  • Coach and train underwriting staff based on underwriting audit results
  • Work with Operations to ensure processing and service standards are met
  • Communicate agency production, training, or quality issues to Marketing
  • Maintain relationships with Actuarial, Product Development, Claims, IT, and other internal resources
  • Identify new market opportunities, product offerings, and cross-sell opportunities
  • Maintain technical pricing standards and underwriting authority for the commercial property product line
  • Set underwriting standards and strategy for the commercial property product
  • Manage the Railroad book, including portfolio aggregation management
  • Direct regional underwriting teams and ensure execution aligns with product goals
  • Prepare, coordinate, and execute product-line-specific training
  • Review accounts beyond assigned authority levels
  • Communicate product, underwriting, and claims concerns to Senior Leadership
  • Work with Business Development teams to target producers and manage client relationships
  • Assist with developing new business opportunities

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Minimum of 10+ years of underwriting expertise
  • At least 5 years of underwriting experience within Railroad/Inland Marine
  • Undergraduate degree preferred
  • Graduate degree and/or industry designations would be a plus
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills
  • Collaborative style
  • High energy, pro-active self-starter with a strong sense of urgency
  • Demonstrated ability to set and meet objectives and gain leadership, peer, and underwriter buy-in through influencing skills
  • Flexible and spontaneous qualities
  • Strong interpersonal skills, confidence, integrity, energy, enthusiasm, and executive presence
  • Ability to travel 25%
  • US Work Authorization required
