About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Perform unit secretarial duties under the supervision of the Nursing Director
  • Coordinate unit/floor procedures to support efficient department operations and quality patient care
  • Answer and manage unit phone calls, take messages, and place pages and calls
  • Collaborate with healthcare team members and other departments
  • Schedule patient diagnostic tests, appointments, and consults
  • Maintain, label, file, copy, and request patient medical records
  • Initiate and track Facilities, Bio Med, Housekeeping, and IT requests or work orders
  • Order, expedite, and distribute unit, clerical, and patient care supplies
  • Coordinate patient admissions, transfers, discharges, transportation, and equipment
  • Enter and update bed management, diet orders, advance care directives, code status, medication reconciliation, restraint, assignment, recovery charge, and billing information
  • Use Meditech to access and update administrative data, enter transport and PASSPORT orders, and print labels, kardexes, and medication administration reports
  • Communicate admissions, discharges, and transfers to charge nurses, clinical leaders, admitting, and nursing supervisors
  • Provide clerical support and answer patient call lights
  • Receive and orient visitors and provide basic unit information to patients and families
  • Float to other pods or units and provide backup patient transport coverage
  • Participate in quality improvement projects, committees, SEAQ programs, staff meetings, competency activities, and continuing education
  • Orient or precept new personnel as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required
  • Certified Nursing Assistant/Patient Care Technician [CNA/PCT] credential required
  • HeartSaver CPR AED - American Heart Association (AHA) required
  • Certified Nursing Assistant or current Nursing Student who has completed Fundamentals of Nursing or equivalent med/surgical clinical rotation
  • Successful completion of an approved nursing assistant training program
  • Ability to effectively speak, read and write using the English language
  • Ability to pass clinical competency, basic math and reading testing
  • Ability to perform basic math calculations and measurements
  • Ability to accurately interpret and utilize basic medical terminology and abbreviations
  • Ability to enter and retrieve computerized information
  • Physical ability to push, transfer, and pull heavy loads throughout assigned shift
  • Physical ability to meet core job requirements in accordance with practice setting demands
  • Effective interpersonal skills to interact appropriately with nursing staff, patients, families/visitors, physicians, and other hospital staff
  • Organizational skills to set priorities and efficiently complete assigned work
  • Ability to manage stress related to patient care issues and changing hospital climate and personnel issues
  • Every other weekend and holiday requirements
