About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Support safe and efficient operation of the patient care unit
  • Answer unit phones, take accurate messages, and place pages and phone calls
  • Collaborate with healthcare team members and other departments
  • Schedule patient diagnostic tests, appointments, and consults
  • Maintain and organize patient medical records
  • Initiate and track Facilities, Bio Med, Housekeeping, and IT requests
  • Order, expedite, and distribute unit, clerical, and patient care supplies
  • Coordinate patient admissions, transfers, and discharges
  • Coordinate discharge logistics including transportation and equipment
  • Use bed management and Meditech systems to update records, enter requests, and print reports and labels
  • Provide clerical support to unit staff and answer patient call lights
  • Receive and orient visitors and provide basic unit information
  • Provide backup patient transport coverage
  • Communicate patient and unit information during shift handoffs
  • Float to other pods or units and cross-train as requested
  • Participate in quality improvement projects, committees, SEAQ programs, staff meetings, and safety activities
  • Orient or precept new personnel as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required
  • Certified Nursing Assistant/Patient Care Technician [CNA/PCT] credential required
  • HeartSaver CPR AED - American Heart Association (AHA) required
  • Successful completion of an approved nursing assistant training program
  • Ability to effectively speak, read, and write using the English language
  • Ability to pass clinical competency, basic math, and reading testing
  • Ability to perform basic math calculations and measurements
  • Ability to accurately interpret and utilize basic medical terminology and abbreviations
  • Ability to enter and retrieve computerized information
  • Physical ability to push, transfer, and pull heavy loads throughout assigned shift
  • Physical ability to meet core job requirements in accordance with practice setting demands
  • Effective interpersonal skills with nursing staff, patients, families/visitors, physicians, and hospital staff
  • Organizational skills to set priorities and efficiently complete assigned work
  • Ability to manage stress related to patient care issues and changing hospital climate/personnel issues
  • Part-time per diem: 16 shifts in 6 months; at least 1–2 weekend shifts per month; 8-hour shifts minimum; weekend and holiday rotation
