About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Function as a member of the patient care team under the direction of the Registered Nurse
- Support the RN with clinical tasks including blood glucose monitoring, EKGs, simple dressings, aseptic technique, and emergency response using CPR/AED skills
- Respond to patient and family needs and support efficient unit operations
- Maintain a safe patient environment, conduct room rounds, assist with ambulation, and provide patient observation
- Follow restraint, infection control, safety, confidentiality, and hospital policies
- Organize and prioritize patient care and coordinate breaks and assignments with nursing staff
- Communicate patient conditions and delegated-task status to the RN; recognize and report significant changes
- Collect, record, and document vital signs, intake/output, blood sugar, weights, and other patient data
- Provide patient comfort, personal care, skin care, toileting, feeding, positioning, and basic patient education
- Assist with patient admissions, discharges, transfers, treatments, and procedures
- Transport patients, belongings, equipment, and supplies
- Perform EKGs, blood glucose monitoring, simple dressing changes, specimen collection, and end-of-life/post-mortem care
- Maintain patient rooms, restock supplies, inspect equipment, and perform cleaning/decontamination
- Respond to call lights and emergencies within the scope of the role
- Participate in staff meetings, in-services, quality improvement programs, and competency activities
- Assist in orienting new patient care assistants and serve as a resource to float staff
Requirements
What you’ll need- High School Diploma or Equivalent required
- Certified Nursing Assistant/Patient Care Technician [CNA/PCT] credential required
- Heartsaver CPR AED - American Heart Association (AHA) credential required
- Certified Nursing Assistant or current Nursing Student who has completed Fundamentals of Nursing or equivalent medical/surgical clinical rotation
- Successful completion of an approved nursing assistant training program
- Ability to effectively speak, read and write using the English language
- Ability to pass clinical competency, basic math and reading testing
- Ability to perform basic math calculations and measurements
- Ability to accurately interpret and utilize basic medical terminology and abbreviations
- Ability to enter and retrieve computerized information
- Physical ability to push, transfer, and pull heavy loads throughout assigned shift
- Physical ability to meet core job requirements in accordance with practice setting demands
- Effective interpersonal skills to interact appropriately with nursing staff, patients, families/visitors, physicians, and other hospital staff
- Organizational skills to set priorities and efficiently complete assigned work
- Ability to manage stress related to patient care issues and changing hospital climate and personnel issues
- Every other weekend and holiday rotation
- Full-time, 40-hour night shift
