About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Lead a team of underwriting consultants through coaching, question-answering, and guidance on workflow, procedures, resources, and underwriting
Maintain awareness of department service-level requirements and support achievement of service goals
Work with leadership to develop and deliver the strategic vision and execute day-to-day results
Acquire, retain, and develop IDI underwriting talent
Lead, guide, mentor, and coach disability underwriters in technical and professional skills
Cultivate continuous improvement and root-cause problem-solving activities
Ensure exceptional customer experiences for career advisors and brokers
Collaborate with Compliance, Legal, and underwriting partners on policies and regulatory issues
Monitor medical, financial, and occupational underwriting developments
Perform trending and root-cause analysis to identify gaps and provide feedback on training and procedures
Develop and maintain relationships with General Agents, advisors, brokerage directors, and firm staff
Resolve escalations, discrepancies, and risk-related concerns while considering case financials, relationships, and customer value

Requirements

What you’ll need

High School Diploma
7+ years of Disability Underwriting experience
2+ years leading or mentoring production underwriters
Candidates residing within 50 miles of the Springfield MassMutual office will be expected to work a Hybrid schedule of 3 days a week in the office
10+ years of direct IDI underwriting experience with an underwriting authority
7+ years production underwriting experience
IDI underwriting leadership experience
Bachelor's Degree
Experience leading a concierge service team
Proven experience of innovation and effective brainstorming
Openness to new methods, processes, or ways of performing work
Advanced critical path thinking
Demonstrated knowledge of medical, non-medical, and financial risk selection
Proven track record of partnership with sales, product, marketing, and compliance
Flexibility to travel and work outside of standard office hours
