About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Maintain current knowledge of security and networking best practices
  • Keep current with technology and AEC industry developments
  • Install, maintain, and administer computer networks, hardware, systems software, applications, and configurations
  • Travel to all McGill locations as needed
  • Gather customer-needs data and evaluate system and network requirements
  • Assist the IT Director with procurement of IT assets, software, peripheral devices, and contracts
  • Manage day-to-day IT operations and all IT assets, systems, and software
  • Assign and register IT assets in asset-management software
  • Maintain network-function logs and repair records
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve hardware, software, network, and system problems
  • Maintain emergency-repair parts inventory
  • Configure, monitor, and maintain email applications, antivirus software, and firewalls
  • Monitor computer-system and network performance and coordinate network access
  • Design, configure, and maintain the image server
  • Design, configure, and install network cabling and infrastructure
  • Recommend improvements to systems and network configurations
  • Leverage outside technical expertise and manage IT service providers and vendors
  • Conduct system updates, upgrades, and planned improvements
  • Plan and execute upgrades and service interruptions during nights and weekends
  • Perform network startup and shutdown procedures and maintain control records
  • Ensure security of IT assets, data, network access, and backup systems
  • Perform data backups and disaster-recovery operations
  • Keep IT systems mapping current
  • Report negligent use, policy violations, and threats to IT systems and security to the IT Director
  • Assist with monthly reporting to the President on system status, tickets, projects, service interruptions, and IT expenditures
  • Set up new employees and provide introductory information
  • Follow up with employee customers regarding operation and functionality
  • Escalate employee concerns to the IT Director
  • Develop and present training as requested
  • Serve on committees and teams and participate in special projects
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology or management information systems, in addition to 10 years of progressive IT experience, or an approved equivalent of experience, skill and training as approved by the President
  • Cisco Certified Network Professional certification preferred
  • Excellent working knowledge of computer hardware, software, network systems, storage, IT analytics and controls, disaster recovery, data and cyber security, phone systems and cell phones
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills to interface effectively with all employee customers
  • Experience with Egnyte and Microsoft Intune preferred
  • Valid driver’s license and overnight travel required
  • Must be available outside normal work hours to respond via remote access or in person
