About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Contribute to excellence in health care and fulfill the mission of the unit
- Provide customer service to the public, patients, staff, and physicians
- Coordinate physician schedules, calendars, mail, appointments, meetings, and on-call/hospital consults
- Complete disability, FMLA, and medical insurance forms within required timeframes
- Communicate with patients, physicians, hospitals, radiology facilities, laboratories, insurance companies, and professional associations
- Answer and respond to incoming calls professionally
- Schedule appointments and obtain authorizations for Worker’s Compensation, MVA cases, MRI, bone scans, and CT scans
- Schedule and facilitate peer-to-peer requests
- Maintain computer databases and use scheduling, EMR, and other software
- Collect payments for forms and x-ray requests
- Compose and type correspondence for physicians and patients
- Coordinate communication regarding patient care questions and post-surgery needs
- Participate in patient-care planning, evaluation, documentation, performance improvement, staff development, education, orientation, data collection, committees, and staff meetings
- Keep patients informed about scheduled tests and procedures
- Provide cross-coverage for secretaries, schedulers, and operators
- Report required information and unusual occurrences according to policies and procedures
- Follow Federal and State patient privacy and workplace guidelines, including HIPAA and OSHA
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
What you’ll need- Minimum High School Diploma or GED required
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position
- One (1) to three (3) years of medical office experience
- Proficient knowledge of Medical Terminology
- Strong written and verbal communications skills
- Accurate and efficient data entry skills
- Proficient computer software skills, including Microsoft Excel, Word, EMR data entry, and database skills
- Strong attention to detail
- Ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment
- Successful handling of confidential information
- Professional communication with patients, peers, and physicians
- Must understand and adhere to OrthoMaryland’s policies and procedures
- Works cooperatively within own unit/department and with other units and departments
- Above average spelling and typing skills
- Ability to work independently, with excellent communication and organizational skills and flexibility
- Position entails prolonged sitting and typing with extensive computer and telephone use; lifting is limited
