About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide laboratory support to the Convenient Care Center and Spring Emergency Center
  • Perform laboratory testing and procedures supporting patient diagnosis and treatment
  • Manage daily laboratory operations, including specimen collection, processing, quality control, testing, result reporting, and distribution
  • Interpret, correlate, and verify test results using laboratory techniques, principles, and instrumentation
  • Maintain testing analyzers and perform corrective actions and troubleshooting
  • Perform clerical duties to maintain efficient workflow
  • Maintain education and testing competencies based on patient populations served
  • Handle chemicals, biological specimens, and hazardous materials according to safety procedures
  • Direct personnel as appropriate and communicate exceptional circumstances
  • Interact with hospital personnel, volunteers, physicians, and patients regarding specimens, orders, and results
  • Support point-of-care testing throughout the hospital
  • Support blood bank operations and massive transfusion protocols
  • Process reference laboratory specimens, monitor pending results, and follow send-out protocols
  • Process and perform testing on approved research specimens as assigned
  • Use system computers and vendor software
  • Comply with Laboratory Services, hospital, system, governmental, and accrediting policies and standards
  • Support customer service, quality, and performance improvement initiatives
  • Build relationships with customers and collaborate on corrective actions
  • Promote professional growth, continuing education, and competency development
  • Serve as a preceptor, mentor, and resource for less experienced staff
  • Perform competency assessments and participate in peer interviews or applicant competency evaluations as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • At Texas Medical Center Laboratories, support moderate- and high-complexity services for trauma, transplant, neonatal, ECMO, and other high-acuity populations
  • Perform assigned specialized laboratory procedures and support specialized blood bank and transfusion protocols

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Experienced Medical Laboratory Scientist or MLT
  • Generalist experience required
  • Must be ASCP/AMT certified; alternatively, ASCP certification eligible and become certified within one year
  • For generalist MLS positions: Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science/Clinical Laboratory Science from an accredited institution, or Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Science and Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical/medical laboratory science
  • Equivalency required for foreign education
  • Technical proficiency in laboratory testing and procedures
  • Knowledge of laboratory techniques, principles, and instrumentation
  • Ability to perform waived, moderate, and high complexity testing
  • Ability to maintain testing analyzers and perform instrument troubleshooting
  • Ability to handle chemicals, biological specimens, and hazardous materials safely
  • Functional knowledge of system computers and vendor software as required
  • Compliance with applicable laboratory policies, procedures, and governmental/accrediting standards including TJC, FDA, CAP, AABB, CMS, HCFA, and CLIA
  • Availability for rotating day and overnight shifts, 7 a.m.–7 p.m. or 7 p.m.–7 a.m.
  • At least 1 shift per pay period every 2 weeks
  • Training availability of 3 to 4 shifts per week for up to 6 weeks
