About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Shape technical direction for XB cross-border backend systems enabling buyers in the US, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Europe to buy from Japanese sellers on Mercari and Mercari Shops
Lead cross-team design across discovery and search, item detail, pricing and landed cost, checkout and payments, and post-purchase
Set clear service boundaries and API contracts, including BFF patterns for iOS, Android and Web
Design and build maintainable Go services while remaining hands-on in complex implementation work
Use coding agents and AI-assisted review to improve engineering speed and quality
Build multi-region systems so one global app platform serves every market consistently
Own reliability across JP marketplace services, partner APIs, payments and third-party providers
Set standards for safe rollout, observability and incident learning, using AI-assisted automation to reduce toil
Make 2 to 4 teams materially faster by resolving complex design problems and simplifying the platform
Partner with product managers and engineers in India and Japan to turn ambiguous cross-functional problems into executable plans
Mentor senior engineers and develop technical leaders, including effective collaboration with AI agents
Help define how XB engineers and autonomous agents design, review, ship and operate software while maintaining quality and reliability

Requirements

What you’ll need

10 to 12 years of professional software engineering experience, with demonstrated leadership of complex backend initiatives spanning multiple teams
Deep experience building and running distributed systems in cloud-native environments (GCP, Kubernetes)
Strong backend skills in Go, or proven ability to become productive in Go quickly, including API design and testing
Proven delivery of large, customer-visible product surfaces, not only internal services
Strong system design, data modeling and production debugging experience, including systems operating at 99.95% availability
Ability to influence architecture across multiple teams without formal authority
Hands-on experience applying AI/LLMs to improve engineering productivity, such as coding agents, AI-assisted review, testing or debugging
Clear written and verbal communication, including explaining architecture decisions and risks to technical and non-technical stakeholders
Good-to-have: cross-border e-commerce, payments, multi-currency or multi-region systems
Good-to-have: search, personalization or data platforms, including Elasticsearch, event streams or ML pipelines
Good-to-have: BFF API design and familiarity with React or mobile clients
Good-to-have: integrating with third-party partners or external APIs at scale
Good-to-have: driving platformization or tech simplification
Good-to-have: experience developing AI agents or AI-powered developer tooling
Ability or willingness to learn Mercari's JP marketplace domain and internal platforms
Ability or willingness to learn cross-border specifics such as duties, tax, logistics and region rules
