About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Define and build the platform Mercury engineers use to deploy, operate, and evolve services
  • Own the strategy for Mercury’s service ecosystem, including identity, authentication, discovery, and communication
  • Work with product stakeholders and Release Engineering to create a paved deployment path with defaults for rollouts, rollbacks, configuration, secrets, and operational safety
  • Evolve Mercury’s service runtime architecture, including Kubernetes, while keeping existing services healthy during the transition
  • Make observability self-service for product engineers
  • Partner with Release Engineering, Security, and product engineering teams to create infrastructure compliant with financial regulations
  • Identify high-leverage gaps and ship pragmatic improvements
  • Establish patterns that support more services without proportionally increasing operational complexity
  • Mentor engineers and shape infrastructure thinking beyond directly owned systems

Requirements

What you’ll need

  • Strong instincts around deployment architecture, failure modes, and migrations
  • Experience designing or materially owning service-to-service authentication, workload identity, service discovery, service mesh, or related distributed-systems infrastructure
  • Experience building self-service observability or operational tooling for application engineers
  • Strong platform-design judgment, including knowing when not to build something
  • Product-oriented internal-platform mindset, including adoption, ergonomics, defaults, documentation, and escape hatches
  • Ability to gain alignment across teams with different goals and perspectives
  • Ability to communicate technical tradeoffs clearly
  • Experience operating at the boundary between deep technical work and broad organizational leverage
  • Experience building an internal developer platform or service infrastructure at a scaled engineering organization is useful
