About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Serve as MGT's senior-most legal advisor to the CEO, executive team, and board
Advise on legal risk, regulatory strategy, and major business decisions
Own the regulatory compliance program, including state insurance department relationships, licensing, market conduct, rate and form filings, and multi-state compliance
Advise Claims leadership on litigation strategies and review external counsel recommendations
Structure and negotiate agreements for partnerships, reinsurance contracts, carrier agreements, MGA arrangements, and M&A transactions
Manage outside counsel relationships across litigation, regulatory, and transactional matters
Build corporate governance infrastructure, including corporate records, entity management, and policies for a regulated insurance carrier
Advise Product and Underwriting on legal and regulatory implications of new products, states, and appetite expansions
Own contract review and management for vendor, technology, data, and privacy agreements
Build and eventually lead a small, AI-enabled legal and compliance team

Requirements

What you’ll need

J.D.
Active bar membership in at least one U.S. state
10+ years of legal experience
Significant exposure to P&C insurance preferred
Track record advising executive teams and boards on legal risk and strategic decisions
Experience managing outside counsel relationships across multiple practice areas
Comfortable building a legal function from scratch and establishing process and governance
Prior in-house experience at a P&C carrier, MGA, or insurtech preferred
Experience advising on or litigating coverage disputes, claims handling exposure, and policy interpretation matters preferred
Direct experience with state insurance regulatory compliance preferred
Experience with corporate transactions such as M&A, strategic partnerships, or capital raises preferred
Familiarity with AI/algorithmic underwriting regulation and emerging insurance technology regulatory frameworks preferred
Experience building legal or compliance functions at a high-growth company preferred
Admitted and E&S/surplus lines regulatory experience preferred
