About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide artistic, educational, and administrative leadership for the Miami University Marching Band and Pep Bands
  • Develop and implement strategies to recruit, retain, and grow participation in the athletic band program
  • Direct the Miami University Marching Band and Pep Bands
  • Conduct the Symphony Band or another appropriate concert ensemble as assigned
  • Teach undergraduate courses consistent with expertise and curricular needs
  • Contribute to curricular areas such as music education, instrumental music, music production, music business, music technology, or conducting
  • Mentor students and support their artistic, professional, and academic development
  • Build relationships with high school band directors, music educators, prospective students, alumni, and other recruitment constituencies
  • Collaborate with Admissions, Enrollment Management, Athletics, Advancement, and University partners
  • Participate in program, College, and University service
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to advance the artistic and educational mission of the band and Music programs
  • Contribute to development of the Music program and interdisciplinary performing-arts academic unit
  • Begin work in July to prepare for marching band season, including summer auditions and band camp
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Master’s degree in music or an appropriate related field by the date of appointment for Assistant Lecturer appointment
  • DMA, Ph.D., or other appropriate terminal degree in music or a related field by the date of appointment for Assistant Teaching Professor appointment
  • Demonstrated experience conducting and leading instrumental ensembles
  • Demonstrated ability to provide artistic and organizational leadership for a collegiate marching band, athletic band, or comparable large ensemble program
  • Evidence of the ability to recruit, mentor, and retain students
  • Demonstrated expertise appropriate to teaching at the undergraduate level in one or more areas relevant to the Music program
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a Division 1 athletic bands program
  • Ability to work effectively with students and colleagues from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences
  • Criminal background check required
  • Cover letter, curriculum vitae, and teaching philosophy statement required
  • Video/audio recordings or additional evidence of teaching effectiveness may be requested following initial review
